Description
This work presents the development of a customised eddy current testing system for the non-destructive inspection of multistrand carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) cables through their protective braided sheath. The study covers probe geometry optimisation via finite element simulation, experimental validation on cables with artificial defects of varying morphologies, and the development of dedicated acquisition software for automated two-dimensional and three-dimensional defect mapping. The results demonstrate that customised eddy current probes can reliably detect crushed, severed and separated carbon fibre rods in the first and second layers, addressing a gap in the current NDT capabilities for composite cable structures.
